To recruit, retain, and educate a strong community of well-informed and connected health information experts, and to be advocates for excellence in the field while furthering the aims of the Medical Library Association (MLA).

VALUES STATEMENT: [what we believe]

The Midwest Chapter/MLA adopts the core values of the Medical Library Association (MLA

  • Use of scientific evidence in making health care decisions
  • Public awareness of, access to, and use of high-quality health information
  • Lifelong learning and professional development
  • Advancement of health information research and evidence-based practice
  • An open, inclusive, and collaborative environment within and outside the profession
  • Advancement and support of accessibility for all stakeholder groups
  • Irreproachable ethical standards (Code of Ethics for Health Sciences Librarians)

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential values of the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association (the Midwest Chapter). To that end, the Midwest Chapter fosters excellence and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in professional practice, leadership of health sciences libraries, and information professionals, now and in the future.

MISSION STATEMENT: [why we exist]

The Midwest Chapter believes that quality information is essential for improved health and health care. It is a regional association of the most valued and trusted health information experts, whose members are committed to lifelong learning. The Midwest Chapter enhances the quality of health care, education, and research throughout the Midwest region of the United States through leadership and partnerships among members and healthcare institutions in the creation and sharing of knowledge. The Chapter furthers the goals of the MLA in the Midwest region by supporting their missions of

  • Recruiting and retaining individuals in the profession, serving members, and developing leadership skills
  • Promoting and creating opportunities for lifelong learning
  • Advocating for the value of health information and demonstrating the role that health information professionals play
  • Developing and managing a knowledgebase of health information research
  • Building a network of experts
